Prospecting and Geologic Mapping
The first step to exploring a greenfields project is prospecting and mapping. Prospecting and mapping in the boreal forest on the Canadian Shield presents a distinctive set of challenges and opportunities. This ancient geological formation, characterized by its rugged terrain and remoteness hosts a wealth of mineral resources concealed beneath its rocky surface. Prospecting and mapping are crucial for identifying new mineralization trends and exploration targets. By systematically surveying a region and collecting samples and data from various locations we can help can uncover previously unrecognized mineral prospects and expand the geological knowledge base of the area.

Soil Geochemical and Geobotanical Surveys
Soil and botanical sampling play a pivotal role in early exploration activities within the boreal forest region of the Canadian Shield, particularly due to the scarcity of bedrock outcrops. In this rugged terrain, where thick layers of glacial sediments and dense vegetation often obscure underlying geological features, traditional methods of surface mapping are challenging or unfeasible. In these situations, soil and botanical sampling provide valuable insights into the subsurface geology and potential mineralization of the area. By analyzing the chemical composition and mineral content of soil samples, geologists can identify anomalous concentrations of minerals associated with nearby ore bodies. Similarly, botanical sampling involves collecting and analyzing vegetation samples for trace elements and mineral uptake patterns, which can serve as indicators of underlying mineralization. These techniques allow geologists to delineate prospective areas for further exploration, guiding the allocation of resources and drilling activities. Thus, soil and botanical sampling serve as essential tools for early-stage exploration efforts in the Canadian Shield’s boreal forest region, enabling the explorationist to uncover valuable mineral deposits despite the challenges posed by limited bedrock exposure.

Trenching and Channel Cutting
After new mineralized outcrops or geochemical hotspots are identified by prospecting, soil sampling, or geobotanical survey, the next step is often trenching and channel sampling. Using heavy equipment or hand tools are used to expose underlying bedrock, high pressure water pumps are then set up to wash the surface of soil and debris. This allows a geologist to examine in detail the nature of the bedrock which can then be cut using powerful diamond blade saws. Samples are then taken to be analyzed, and ‘trench maps’ drawn up.
